Steve Hummer is a husband, father, and experienced high school Social Studies teacher who came to Conscious Discipline through his wife, who works for Loving Guidance. He attended the Infant/Toddler Institute to become a better father and quickly realized how Conscious Discipline could be modified for use in his high school classroom. He continues to re-tool and refine the skills to better suit the needs of secondary students.
Steve has over a decade of experience working as a high school Social Studies teacher. He holds a B.A. in History and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. In a manner of speaking, Steve says, he “married into” Conscious Discipline. His wife Julie has worked as an editor for Loving Guidance for many years. When Steve and Julie had their first daughter, they attended the Conscious Discipline Infant/Toddler Institute together to become better, more attuned parents.
Since then, Steve has worked with his wife Julie to consistently implement Conscious Discipline within his family. From there, it was a natural progression for the skills and powers of Conscious Discipline to migrate to Steve’s other family, the students in his classroom. For Steve, teaching is all about building a positive relationship with his students, and he uses Conscious Discipline to foster a feeling of family in the classroom.
In an environment where students are consistently competing against one another, Steve works to teach them empathy and demonstrate that they can still achieve great things by helping each other, working collectively, and caring for one another as human beings. Steve is excited for the opportunity to work with other secondary school educators in bringing Conscious Discipline skills and techniques to secondary classrooms. He also looks forward to working with parents who are using Conscious Discipline at home.×
