Webinar: Building Safety and Connection in Foster and Adoptive Families

Session 3 – Learning to Handle Difficult Behavior with Success

Children who have experienced trauma often struggle to regulate emotions, resulting in big behaviors. It’s helpful to have a plan for how you will respond if or when these situations occur. You can also learn to manage your own composure and recognize events that trigger big behaviors. Teach children to identify the signs of a “yucky” feeling emerging and create a plan for how they will manage it (e.g. running laps around the yard instead of breaking items).

In this final session, Amy walks you through a step-by-step process for managing big behaviors. She identifies common triggers and how to plan for them, provides tips on responding to questions and comments from relatives, and gives examples of scenarios you may encounter. Amy concludes the webinar with advice on both adoption and the departure of a foster child, as well as additional resources to help you through your journey.
