This book was recommended by my daughter's pre-school teacher to all the parents. It is amazing! I have read it and implemented the steps in my home. It has made a great difference in my house. I now have tools to deal with difficult situations in a positive way without yelling. These same tools will be hopefully be used by my kids in their future relationships with friends, spouses, and of course their children! I bought more copies and gave one to each of my sisters.

I love this book and recommend it often! The only reason I give it a 4 is that chapter 11, which is supposed to show you how to apply the principals taught in the rest of the book, falls very very short in my opinion. It confused me. I feel that she contradicts herself. This chapter just does not fit with the rest of the book for me. That said, the majority of this book presents a lot of really great ideas that make total sense! The examples she gives throughout the book are also excellent and prove that there is practical application for these ideas even if the chapter dedicated to that purpose does not exemplify this fact.

Becky Bailey just parents REAL parenting know how. This book is packed with how to do and say the things that teach children to respect parents and parents how to respect children. Resulting in children who want to do what is being asked or expected of them. While most of us thought we wouldn't do as our parents did we find our selves trapped in saying the very phases we swore we would never. Use this guide to change your habits even in the most stressful moments.

I found myself mad at my 5 year old all the time, and very short tempered around him. It felt like I was always saying 'no' or 'stop that'. It got to the point where I didn't even want to take him anywhere because I didn't want to have to correct him the whole time we were there. In short, I was not having fun being a mom. This book was recommended to me and I started reading it thinking, 'oh my gosh, I do that, is that wrong? Is that why he acts this way? Is that why I act that way?' The book showed me where I had made some poor parenting choices and how re-phrasing things or giving my son real choices he was in charge of could make a big difference. I started changing the way I disciplined him immediately and it has made an immense difference! I've even got my husband to read it because he can see the change in both my son and me. I'm not angry all the time, my son isn't in time-out all the time. We're not fighting about getting dressed and getting in the car, and all the other things that are daily life chores that were once difficult. My style of parenting wasn't working and something had to change. This book made that change happen and has made our house and happier place. Don't get me wrong, there are still hiccups- but it doesn't turn ugly anymore. I only wish that I had known about this book when my son was 3.5 instead of 5, a lot of things could have been avoided!

This book was recommended to me by our principal. It reminds me of the work of Barbara Coloroso, but improves on her book “kids are worth it” by having concrete and actionable advice to implement instead of just abstract philosophy. Love this book, have found its advice effective with my three kids.

I just finished reading the book and I wished I had read it sooner! It’s a short book, but it covers all the practical tips and strategies you need to know to avoid conflicts with your toddlers at home. I’ve used some of the techniques discussed in the book in the last few weeks and I’m already seeing the results. It’s much easier to show my love to my daughter when everything is peaceful. Strongly recommended to new parents!

I have read and started so many different parenting books before I was recommended this book on a mom's group. This book is AMAZING! It focuses on 7 "powers" of self control that deal directly with 7 different discipline techniques. The author does a great job relating personal thoughts and actions to how those thoughts and actions affect our parenting. I feel like this book is not really bogged down with personal opinions and stories like many of the other parenting books I've read. This book is perfectly crafted in that it flows really well from one idea to the next and you can tell that the author is not only passionate, but also knowledgeable about the source material. I have already recommended this book to a friend and will continue to recommend this book to others as my go to parenting book. I am so glad I found this book!!!!

I trained in Conscious Discipline when I worked at a preschool in college and loved the discipline approach. This book was a must for my husband and I when we had a child. We love the perspective. It focuses on staying calm and being disciplined as the parent and changing one's mindset to one of teaching out of love. It makes such a difference in the way I respond to my daughter, and the way she behaves in return. Thank you Becky Bailey!

I read this a few years ago, when my children were small, and it made a huge difference. Becky Bailey knows what she is talking about, and it was enormously helpful. I even made myself a little summary with her main points on it so that I could refer to it often. Then, recently, I decided it was time to read it again, and again I was deeply impressed. This is a book that should be read more than once because it has so much substance in it. Lately I've been giving it to friends and family who are about to have a baby, because I can't think of any other book that would give them better or more practical advice. Don't make the mistake that it only applies to small children. I have found that the ideas she talks about are applicable to any relationship. There are no gimmicks, just a deep understanding of human nature.

You may be familiar with the love and logic books. Those have some good ideas, but there's a narrow line between natural consequences and a consequence that really, to be honest, is more of a punishment invented by a frustrated parent. Becky Bailey does not cross that line. She stays on the side of helping you figure out how to best help your child in a loving and effective way. I have enormous respect for her, and would strongly recommend this book for you. When you apply what she says, you will become a better parent.

I'm really glad I decided to read this book, thanks in large part to reviews of other Amazon users. Took me forever to get through it, but I started getting complements on my parenting style within the first couple of months of picking it up. This is definitely not a collection of "toddler tricks" nor quick fixes to get your kids to do X that you find in every parenting magazine and website- and that might seem like the down side at first, nor is it an academic examination of child psychology. Rather the book validates a parent's yearning to do right by his or her child, fleshes out the why and how of that desire by sharing of useful insights into childhood development and modern family dynamics, and provides practical examples/action items and encouragement to empower parents to implement what their gut tells them is good and right for their children. Though I normally wouldn't, I recommended the book to 2 of my friends before even finishing it. Now that I've finally read all the way through it (and some parts more than once) I will be recommending it to more!

I learned about Becky Bailey through my daughters Kindergarten class as her entire school practices 'conscious discipline' among other brain based techniques. As a regular volunteer, I was so impressed every time I observed the teacher handle conflict--(while much of it, has to do with a very talented teacher who is well trained and educated in early childhood development), I began to learn that her technique was part of the 'conscious discipline' technique (Becky Bailey's school based program). I observed over and over how children were being taught to use their words (literally giving their feelings/emotions recognition) while walking them thru healthy conflict resolution. For me, its ideal to see character development, self esteem and healthy coping skills being developed so naturally at school. But when I finally got curious enough and started looking at Becky Bailey's books for parents, I had no idea of the impact her books would have in my home. I will say that it is challenging and difficult to read the book as it can feel like a strong criticism of many of the techniques we automatically and lovingly do with our children. But honestly, she makes a lot of sense and for me, it resonated deep in my core. She covers such a wide array of topics from discipline to just general self esteem building. She gets at the root of these issues. For example, she covers why building self esteem takes more than mindless compliments and judging comments-- that's "good" "great" "pretty" and so on. When she writes that children want to be noticed, not judged--it finally clarified to me how and why descriptive observation was more beneficial than "oh, that is so great, honey". Once again difficult to acknowledge how many times I was actually judging my daughter under the guise of building her confidence. Very powerful.

There is so much more in this book. This book will challenge you to be a better parent. The author while at times is painfully direct with why certain techniques (you probably are doing) are ineffective, she does share her own struggles with the standards--no one has unlimited patience or can be perfect, every time. But I have to say if you read this book with an open mind, there is great information that will most definitely improve your parenting strategies. I have seen it almost immediately in my home. Also, I can recommend her " I love you rituals" book, another book that can improve and give you small meaningful connections with your child. Overall, great author, great book. I am grateful for the exposure to her work and highly recommend it!
