Why is Conscious Discipline the Solution for Head Start?
Conscious Discipline isn’t a program: it’s a transformational system and framework that works alongside your existing curricula and programs such as CLASS, Frogstreet and HSPPS to create safe and connected classrooms. Here’s why it works:
Decrease Disruptions, Referrals and Chronic Absenteeism
Cultivate a Culture of Connection
Increase Teacher Retention and Job Satisfaction

Conscious Discipline is an adult-first, trauma responsive methodology that integrates resilience, self-regulation, healthy school culture and brain-based discipline practices that foster the critical skills necessary for early childhood development.

The implementation of Conscious Discipline practices in Head Start and Early Head Start Programs boosts CLASS scores, strengthens instructional support, empowers parents for healthier family engagement and positively impacts site and program-wide climate and culture.

Conscious Discipline utilizes the Conscious Discipline Brain State Model, the Seven Powers for Conscious Adults, the School Family and the Seven Skills of Discipline to transform the educational culture and adult mindset before seeking to implement directly with students. This approach fosters trust and emotional security, creating a learning environment in which resilience, social skills, growth and achievement thrive. Its practices directly apply to teachers, coaches, family engagement staff, mental health staff and leadership in Head Start and Early Head Start programs via onsite training, coaching, virtual courses, webinars and podcasts.

With a 25+ year history, Conscious Discipline enjoys a level of fieldwork few programs can match. It is designated a “SELect program,” the highest ranking in CASEL’s Guide to Effective Social and Emotional Learning Programs. The CASEL Guide identifies well-designed, evidence-based programs implemented with students from pre-K through 12th grade that are “appropriate for broad dissemination to schools across the United States.” In a Harvard analysis of the nation’s top 25 social and emotional learning programs, the study’s authors said, “Conscious Discipline provides an array of behavior management strategies and classroom structures teachers can use to turn everyday situations into learning opportunities.” Conscious Discipline scored the highest possible score in 8 of the 10 categories in the study.
