Shubert’s Classroom: S.T.A.R.
How to Use S.T.A.R. in Shubert’s Classroom
Three deep breaths shut off the “fight or flight” system of the brain. This active calming technique is an essential component of emotional health. Teach children to S.T.A.R.: Smile, Take a deep breath And Relax.
S.T.A.R. is one of four core breathing techniques in Conscious Discipline. The other techniques are Drain, Balloon and Pretzel. Download and print free icons for all four in our Resources section, and use Shubert is a S.T.A.R. to help demonstrate how and when to use these techniques.
Post the S.T.A.R., Drain, Balloon and Pretzel icons around the room and in key locations like the Safe Place. Use props like a star wand or the Safe Place Mat to encourage deep breathing. Play music like the “S.T.A.R. Song” on It Starts in the Heart and “Calm Your Brain” on Brain Boogie Boosters to provide helpful musical reminders for active calming. Model S.T.A.R. and other breathing techniques yourself during stressful moments. Create a class job for the “S.T.A.R. helper,” who is responsible for assisting others in breathing deeply.
Learn more about composure and active calming in Chapter 1 of The NEW Conscious Discipline Expanded & Updated book and Workshop 2 on the NEW 10-session online course, Conscious Discipline: Building Resilient Schools and Homes.
