Research Supporting an Environment that Encourages Resilience
Children (and adults!) respond differently to the adversities they face. While some struggle to adapt and cope, others flourish. This ability to adapt positively, despite the odds, is often referred to as resilience. Conscious Discipline is a healthy school and family model focused on creating supportive environments that foster resilience in the face of adversity. Adults—including parents and school staff—play an important role in promoting physically and emotionally safe environments for children to learn and grow.
This paper explains the conditions that put children at risk for negative outcomes, describes factors that can reduce risk and buffer the effects of stressors, reviews how social and emotional learning (SEL) curricula can foster resilience, and describes how the Conscious Discipline (CD) curriculum supports resilience through promoting safety, connection, and problem solving.
