(FEBRUARY 2019) The Hawthorne Judy Center in Baltimore, Maryland is a Title I program that implements Conscious Discipline to promote safety, connection, and kindergarten readiness.
At the Hawthorne Judy Center, children birth to age five and their families receive a comprehensive set of services. The full-day, full-year program is designed to foster school readiness.
With help from Conscious Discipline, students at the Hawthorne Judy Center demonstrated higher rates of kindergarten readiness than other children in the same school zone.
A kindergarten readiness assessment evaluated children as either Demonstrating Readiness, Approaching Readiness, or Emerging Readiness.
In total, 80 percent of Judy Center children with at least one year of Conscious Discipline experience demonstrated kindergarten readiness or were approaching readiness. In comparison, 54 percent of children in the same catchment area with no Judy Center or Conscious Discipline experience demonstrated or were approaching readiness:
- 33 percent of Judy Center children demonstrated kindergarten readiness. 15 percent of children in the same school zone demonstrated readiness.
- 47 percent of Judy Center children and 39 percent of other children in the area were approaching kindergarten readiness.
- While 46 percent of children without Conscious Discipline in the catchment area demonstrated emerging readiness, only 20 percent of Judy Center children fell into this category.
Program Coordinator Rebecca Lindsey said that the Hawthorne Judy Center is “very pleased” with Conscious Discipline’s positive impact.
Without Conscious Discipline, Lindsey said, children at the Hawthorne Judy Center would have readiness scores more closely aligned with the scores of other children in the catchment area. The safe, connected environment created with Conscious Discipline enables students to learn, thrive, and reach their fullest potential.
