How to Use Visual Expectations in the Bathroom

Visual Expectations like “Ways to Be Helpful” and “Picture Rules” show children exactly what we want them to do in a given situation. The more information we give children about our expectations, the more likely they are to cooperate and succeed. Be certain the expectation is doable for your child’s age and ability, set the expectation, show the expectation visually, teach the expectation (multiple times), practice it together (multiple times) and encourage, encourage, encourage to help ensure your child’s success.

In the bathroom, a common Visual Expectation is to show the state you want children to leave the room in before they leave. Display a photo of the way you want the bathroom to look. Add words to support early literacy for young children and to serve as a checklist for older children.
