School founded by Priscilla Chan implements Conscious Discipline to advance mission of improving student outcomes

ORLANDO, Fla. (February 12, 2019)

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is critical for children and schools because it equips students with self-esteem, resilience, and the skills to manage emotions and resolve conflicts. These skills improve school culture and create an optimal environment for learning. The Primary School, which is funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), selected Conscious Discipline as its SEL program. CZI aims to advance human potential and promote equal opportunity in areas such as education, health and scientific research.

The Primary School selected Conscious Discipline as its SEL program because it aligns with the organization’s values and beliefs. Concepts are rooted in brain science and build skills for all children, including those who have experienced trauma. Like the school, Conscious Discipline offers a holistic approach. The Primary School wanted to not only shift the mindset of teachers and staff, but also educate parents and the larger community. Conscious Discipline supports students, teachers, staff and parents.

Currently in its second year of implementation, The Primary School has woven Conscious Discipline into its school culture and philosophy. Teachers are learning how to support their own well-being and how to respond to various behaviors from students. The school receives ongoing training and coaching from Conscious Discipline.

“One of the most important aspects of The Primary School is our whole-child approach,” said Meredith Liu, The Primary School’s president and COO. “We are constantly thinking beyond the classroom to ensure that each of our students can come to school healthy and ready to learn. In school, Conscious Discipline is shaping the mindset of our teachers, giving them the tools to support students with a wide range of needs. Outside of school, Conscious Discipline is starting to shape the mindset of our larger community through our connection with parents.”

The Primary School’s mission is to foster the well-being of each child as a foundation for academic and life success. The school provides a holistic system of education, family support services, and healthcare through both medical and mental health providers. Children are admitted to the program as infants and toddlers so staff can work with children and families before the child begins school.

“It has been exciting to watch The Primary School embrace Conscious Discipline,” said Jill Molli, a Conscious Discipline Master Instructor working with The Primary School. “We have developed a brilliant collaboration. The Primary School is very forward- thinking and willing to look outside the box of how we have traditionally educated children in the past. Their whole child approach beautifully complements the Conscious Discipline approach of seeing behavior as a call for help and an opportunity to teach.”
