Karen Hickman has a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, both from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has been in the field of education for over 25 years, including teaching grades 4-6 in public school, operating an in-home preschool program for ten years and teaching as an adjunct professor for the University of Missouri-Columbia. Karen also has background experience as a Certified High/Scope Trainer and a Certified High/Scope Teacher. In 2003, the Central Missouri Association for the Education of Young Children honored Karen with the Outstanding Early Childhood Professional Award.

Karen Hickman has worked in the field of education for more than 25 years, including operating an in-home preschool program, teaching grades 4-6 in a public school and teaching as an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is an award-winning teacher, a Conscious Discipline Master Instructor, and a certified High/Scope trainer and teacher.

Her journey with Conscious Discipline began when she became a mother and sought to improve her relationships and parenting skills with her own two children. Conscious Discipline has touched every aspect of her life, both personal and professional. Karen is passionate about sharing with others the powers and skills that have transformed her interactions with those she loves. She values the relationship-based approach that Conscious Discipline is grounded in and has been blessed to be part of a faith-based community that embraces Conscious Discipline.

Karen was a contributing author to Frog Street Pre-K, which integrates the Seven Skills of Conscious Discipline throughout nine themes and 180 days of instruction. Each day begins with a Greeting Circle where the focus is building a sense of community by implementing the components of the Brain Smart Start. Karen integrated the School Family classroom structures throughout the nine themes to guide teachers in their implementation of Conscious Discipline.

Being a highly sought after presenter, Karen specializes in interactive and informative workshops for parents, preschool programs, elementary schools, and faith-based communities. She weaves personal stories throughout her presentations that resonate with her audiences. Her organized, calm and conversational style helps people to feel at home.
