How does Conscious Discipline help us understand our early education, elementary and middle school students?

Public schools have reported that 50% of students were behind in grade level for PreK-12th grade education in 2022, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Meanwhile, only 13% of public schools “strongly agreed” that their schools were able to provide mental health services to their students. It’s abundantly clear that our youngest students need help with emotional regulation and stress.
As a workshop for teachers, administrators, and mental health advocates, this event targets the most significant, urgent needs affecting kids in our school districts in early education through middle school. In this adult-mindset-focused (professional development conference for educators), we will learn to master improving the social-emotional and/or academic success of those in elementary and middle schools.

Why is this educator conference so recommended?

As a Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) approved SELect program, Conscious Discipline has a decades-long track record in transforming whole districts. Backed by +25 years of fieldwork, our program has excelled in third-party studies.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO EDUCATION CONFERENCES

An interest article by Jenny Shannon

A new school year brings a new set of challenges, and the feedback from returning educators is clear: While we’ve made great strides, educators still lack many of the supports they need. Schools continue to navigate persistent stress, anxiety, trauma and other mental health concerns among students and staff. Teachers are faced with issues such as escalating behavior problems in the classroom, achievement gaps, behavior plans for defiant students and a multitude of other interventions for students. The professional landscape includes challenges in teacher recruitment and retention, school safety concerns, and persistent feelings of a lack of agency. There has never been a stronger need for change, both inside and out.

Unlike other professional development conferences or education conferences in 2023 that attempt to address these issues without providing comprehensive solutions, Elevate Conscious Discipline provides practical and evidence-based solutions for a healthier, more fulfilling future for teachers and students alike!

Purposefully scheduled in the month of October, Elevate arrives at the perfect time in the school year when you know your students well enough to identify their needs, and when you still have plenty of time to provide the behavior management strategies, practical skills, meaningful practices and mindset shifts required to assist them in making the school year a success.

    THE RELEVANCY PROBLEM

We know you’ve been to plenty of conferences geared toward educators already— You want to grow in your practice and in your field, and your administrator encourages that desire. (Also, your state mandates a certain amount of continuing education.) You research conferences and workshops closest to your home, and ones that might be applicable to the age/grade demographic you instruct. It’s difficult to choose a topic and specification considering the plethora of challenges you faced the year before, but you finally settle on one you feel hopeful about. You show up excited to attend an educational leadership conference, or one of the advertised “best education conferences,” until you discover that none of the keynote speakers have ever taught a class or held a position in education administration.

You’re feeling skeptical and disappointed. How could what they offer be relevant or helpful for what you are facing when they’ve never walked in your shoes? How can someone provide guidance for a behavior intervention plan for tantrums, make suggestions on positive behavioral supports, or inspire lasting change when they have never been in the classroom? How could a conference on one specific issue help you face all of the rest of the challenges waiting for you upon your return?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could hear stories, experiences, applications and effective strategies from someone in your position who has navigated the same challenges you have? What if there was just one conference that covered it all:

    • Interactive, inspiring and engaging teaching
    • Educator-driven keynotes, breakout sessions and demonstration classrooms
    • Evidence-based, relevant content
    • An effective system or practice that can be applied to all challenges not just classroom management
    • A take-away behavior intervention plan to follow and implement directly upon return
    • Time devoted to practicing the skills, strategies and techniques learned
    • A safe, connected, inspiring atmosphere that honors and celebrates you as an educator

AN ELEVATED SOLUTION: THE TOP EDUCATION CONFERENCE 2024

At Conscious Discipline, we respect educators for the experts they are and trust that they know their own needs the best. This is why Elevate Conscious Discipline is a conference for educators, by educators, and why it has gained traction as one of the best educational conferences in 2023.

Active teachers, specialists and administrators from across the nation enlighten this conference experience with practical, inspiring sessions spanning eight different tracks to highlight the age and grade that you are most impacted by. But it doesn’t end with the attendance of some powerful speaking engagements and a renewed spirit to return with a shift in perspective.

Conscious Discipline wants to ensure you are prepared with tools to implement our practice, which is why participants at Elevate collaborate with seasoned professionals to develop a comprehensive and personalized plan to meet today’s challenges with compassion, community and lasting educational success. We not only want to renew your passion and inspire you to move forward, but to equip educators with a comprehensive road map for navigating the complexities of the modern world and progress in your transformational journey with Conscious Discipline.

Our pandemic and post-pandemic experiences made a few things very clear:

    1. Some of the ways we’ve “always done things” creates more problems than it solves.
    2. If we are going to thrive as educators and administrators, we need to be curious about the long-term outcome of the way we perceive student behavior, systems of reward/punishment, wellness and mental health, and our expectation that children be able to utilize skills we struggle with — and actively seek to change the methods that no longer serve.

To embark on a truly transformational journey that will change your life and the lives of the students you serve, it all comes down to an upgrade in mindset, skills and ability. For 25+ years, Conscious Discipline has been a leader in this space, offering educators, administrators, parents and professionals the fresh perspectives and the proven strategies necessary to address even the deepest challenges effectively. Rather than focusing on behavior modification of the student, Conscious Discipline’s centralized focus is on the adult in the room; knowing that if students are to have any hope of regulation, their educators must first regulate themselves. Elevate Conscious Discipline explores resilience, self-regulation, practical implementation, skill building and more.

In a world where conferences and workshops designed for educators are often absent of educators themselves, Elevate shines as a beacon of hope, relevance and practical application. If you’ve had enough of Band-Aids, quick fixes, mandates and curricula adjustments that never hold, renew your passion and purpose with like-minded educators at Elevate.

ELEVATE 2023 RECAP: THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENT OF THE YEAR!

    By Jenny Shannon

Elevate Conscious Discipline 2023: Renew Your Passion and Purpose was a conference not soon forgotten! This highly anticipated event in Orlando, FL October 19-21 hosted educators, administrators, parents, and professionals from around the world with the intent to connect, inspire and refresh. Boasting a variety of accomplished keynote speakers such as Dr. Becky Bailey, Latoria Marcellus, Amy Speidel, Ginny Luther and Tanyelle L. Hannah, and emceed by the brilliant Kenedria (Kiki) Thurman, there is no doubt that Elevate quickly emerged as the professional development event of the year.

“Conscious Discipline provides events that are vastly different than most professional development offerings out there— Elevate especially,” Dr. Bailey said. She envisioned a conference for educators, by educators, that cultivates connection and inspires implementation through experiences and practical application— And the success of 2023’s Elevate conference shows she got it right!

    EMPOWERING EDUCATORS

Brilliant banners, bold posters, swag bags and inviting lighting effects welcomed participants into an experience to remember. Dinner, dancing and pricey raffle prizes celebrated educators at the welcome reception on opening night. Bright and early the next morning, participants were greeted with fresh pastries, warm croissant sandwiches and piping hot coffee before moving into Latoria Marcellus and Amy Speidel’s fascinating keynote titled Finding Where You Fit and the Power It Takes to Stay There, and enjoying Elevate’s signature feature— a diverse range of interactive breakout sessions delivered by educators who work in the field. This year’s sessions included 40 offerings, ranging from Integrating Conscious Discipline with RTI/MTSS facilitated by Amy Niemeier, to Self-Care the Conscious Discipline Way by Katie Ahearn, to Cultural Responsiveness and Conscious Discipline: The Dynamic Duo with Dr. Valerie Parker, to Conscious Discipline for Every Learner: Teaching Older Children with Neurodiversity delivered by Brooke Haberle and Cheryl Cotter, to Supporting Children’s Potty Learning led by Joan Morgenstern.

Between breakout sessions, attendees browsed the onsite store, enjoyed photo opportunities, and explored model classrooms for various ages. The model classrooms were filled with implementation tools, authentic class books and other materials borrowed from working Conscious Discipline classrooms. Teacher-helpers and Certified Instructors roamed the model classroom area while answering questions, problem solving and sharing their classroom expertise with attendees.

Whether in session, in the halls, or in the model classrooms, attendees had ample opportunity to delve deeper into implementing Conscious Discipline with fidelity and sustainability through engaging discussions, the sharing of personal experiences, connecting with experts and fellow practitioners, and reflecting on the mindset shifts that are essential to implementation. “Conscious Discipline started out with changing our relationship to conflict,” Dr. Bailey stated in her opening keynote, “But you can’t have outer peace without inner peace.”

Friday’s event closed with Ginny Luther’s moving keynote, Blue Star Grit: Releasing Resistance into Resiliency and Renewal, and started anew Saturday morning with breakfast and the dynamic Tanyelle L. Hannah’s keynote There is Joy in the Journey—Plan, Pursue, Prevail. Another round of breakout sessions cemented attendees’ knowledge base as the event began to wind down.

Recurring themes of safety, connection and problem solving wove through many of the sessions. Conscious Discipline’s foundation rests in the Brain State Model and the understanding that optimal learning can only occur when there is a felt sense of safety and connection. Dr. Parker’s poignant and timely breakout session, Cultural Responsiveness and Conscious Discipline: The Dynamic Duo captivated audience members by providing personal and professional insights about how being culturally responsive lays the groundwork for safety in the classroom and in life. “Here is how we help kids feel safe: We acknowledge their human experience, who they are, and how they show up in the world. And not just who they are today.” Dr. Parker explained that this includes the appropriate pronunciation of names, the awareness and removal of micro-aggressions and stereotypes, and how to respond rather than react in challenging situations.

Dr. Becky Bailey’s powerful closing keynote Saturday afternoon brought it all together by focusing on the heart-brain synchronicity. “The heart sends more messages to the brain than the brain does to the heart,” says Dr. Bailey to emphasize the deep and powerful impact our feelings have on our brain states. “How many could feel the energy of other people the last few days?” she asked attendees, who erupted in positive response. “We put out a frequency, and everyone picked up on that,” she confirms from stage, “Your heart can change another person’s brain state.” Among her other core messages for attendees was for them to identify and turn toward their goals, and to keep returning to those goals, even when pulled in the opposite direction. “As changemakers in the world, we change our hearts first,” she said.

CELEBRATING: WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

Conscious Discipline is committed to a long-held belief that “we are all in this together” as we strive toward adult-first self-regulation. But this goal can be difficult to keep sight of when stressors hit and we aren’t surrounded by like-minded others.

The Elevate Conscious Discipline conference enables practitioners to gather with others who are committed to changing their perspective, shifting their attention, seeing behavior as an opportunity to teach new skills, approaching relationships with positive intent, and so much more. It’s not just another professional development conference, or even an educator’s networking event; it’s a homecoming for those who are new to Conscious Discipline and a family reunion for those already on their implementation journey. Wherever you fall on this spectrum, we can’t wait to see you at Elevate Conscious Discipline 2024 in Las Vegas next year!
