From Collective Trauma to Collective Resilience: Rising Above Anger, Apathy, and Anxiety

The Covid-19 pandemic is the most traumatic collective event of our lifetime. We have been living in a sustained survival mode for years. The impact of this collective trauma requires us to address the emotional and mental health needs of children, educators, and families before we can successfully close academic gaps.

Here is what we know:

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics has declared a “national state of emergency in child and adolescent mental health.”
  • Secondary traumatic stress—the emotional toll of hearing about and supporting families and children who have experienced trauma—has severely damaged the teaching profession and disrupted educational practices.
  • The inequities resulting from structural racism have contributed to disproportional impacts on children and families from communities of color.

Here is what you can do for yourself, for your children and for your school during this transformational 2-day event with Dr. Becky Bailey & Kim Jackson:

  • Understand the neuroscience of trauma enough to clearly perceive the problems we are facing.
  • Befriend your resistance and defenses so you can move beyond them to create a felt sense of safety.
  • Understand your internal emotional guidance system and the skills needed to manage anger, apathy and anxiety so you can approach problems instead of withdraw from them.
  • Learn the steps to reach and connect with relationship-resistant children.
  • Create organization-wide rituals and routines that build a compassionate culture in which to learn and work.
  • Learn seven Brain Smart skills and strategies that are essential for regulating the nervous system enough to put yourself, your students and your staff on a path to resiliency.

Here's What You'll Learn:

Big Idea

Our society has experienced a collective trauma that is showing up in the field of education as gaps in student learning and soaring teacher burnout and turnover rates. If we hope to successfully address these pressing issues, we must first address the underlying emotional needs and mental health of both adults and children. This event provides information and strategies that will help us move from collective trauma to collective resilience.

Who Should Attend

This event is designed for a broad audience due to the urgent, essential and practical information it seeks to convey. Administrators, childcare professionals and educators of all age groups, social workers, counselors and psychologists, pediatricians and pediatric nurses, school board members, education advocates and parents will all benefit from this event.

Resilience is often thought of as the ability to bounce back from hardship. The American Psychological Association defines it as “the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional and behavioral flexibility, and adjustment to external and internal demands.” Research demonstrates that resilience can be taught, cultivated and practiced. The practice of Conscious Discipline increases self-regulation, resilience and a variety of social and emotional skills.

Conscious Discipline is an adult-first, trauma-responsive and evidence-based approach to self-regulation. The practice of Conscious Discipline integrates research and brain-based discipline practices, social and emotional learning, theory and application, and a compassionate, equitable school culture.
