I totally agree with Shelley--the explanation of "noticing" alone was totally huge for me and my 16-month old. It makes so much sense and has given us some of our most precious moments together--already. I think this will be a great strategy for us as she grows into a teenager. As part of noticing, I use imitating a lot--doing what my toddler does to show that I'm watching and what she does is important to me. She loves this and laughs and laughs. It makes her feel very important. I am a little intimidated by the finger plays, etc., but I'm sure I'll try them when my daughter is a little older.

The little rhymes in this book are really engaging. I've been using them with my son who has been feeling neglected even since my 4 month old came home from the hospital. He loves it. I made a little book with the rhymes to help me remember them and he asks me to read them over and over. I enjoyed the book because there's a lot of positive and helpful information on parenting, the importance of these little rituals and suggestions on when to use them which has been really helpful for me.

I highly recommend this book..... not as much for the lovely, validating re-write on the horrid old "nursery" rhymes, but for the first half of the book. I was working as a licensed counselor when I found this wonderful book about how an infant's brain develops, and what a parent can to do optimize that growth. This book is readable and easy to understand, while fun to put into use. HIGHLY recommended.

I'm a school director. The little ones in my school LOVE these rituals. For parents struggling with their kids, I recommend these to help the heart connections that get lost in the struggle. And for parents and teachers who are sailing along, these little activities may add another playful dimension to your relationships with your children.

I purchased this book after sitting in on one of my 3yr old daughter's preschool classes. The teacher was singing the book's version of Twinkle Twinkle Little star. I found it so refreshing. "Twinkle, twinkle little star. What a wonderful child you are. With bright eyes and nice round cheeks. Talented person from head to feet. Etc, etc." I wanted to see more. I like this book for all of my kids (1, 2 and 3yrs old). Some of the reviews talk about how this is only for kids who have experienced trauma. Where the book advises on that, it is not the focus. All of our kids have had totally "normal" experiences in life and still respond really well to the book. Who wouldn't? It simply gives ideas on ways to engage with your kids in a fun and loving way. I am addicted to the hearty giggles these nursery rhymes bring out in my kids.
p.s. for what it is worth, I am a part-time pediatrician and this is a book I would recommend to families as a professional also.

I have been a preschool teacher for 21 years. I was given this book by Early childhood educator from Michigan State Univerisity. The program was dealing with stress in children. After reading it I bought 4 more. I gave one of them to my son,and the others to my nieces who recently had babies. I think every parent should read this book. It would make a wonderful gift for a baby shower. The one on one games, are so rewarding for the child and your self.

I discovered Becky Bailey at the recommendation of a day care professional. I have found her strategies, philosophies, and tools have truly changed the way I parent for the better. Her methods purport to parent without guilt which is complete foreign to the way most of my generation was raised. It heals you from within and helps your children. Best of all, you have ways of handling mistakes and aren't expected to be perfect. This book is a handy bunch of connection activities that you can use in a classroom or with your children to reconnect after a day apart, to convey your feelings, and to communicate safety. I highly recommend it as a companion to "There's Got To Be a Better Way" or any of her other books.

My husband and I have been looking for a way to calm our kids down for bed time. This book is full of all kinds of ideas! My daughter will flip through the book and find a particular picture she likes and then ask us to do the activity. Great rituals to add into your everyday life. I am a mother of two boys; 4 year old and a 10 month old. It seems that passed the age of three my little man no longer wanted to just cuddle. He is more interested in playing. This book has given me ways to sneak in important cuddle times with him without even knowing it. He thinks we are simply playing but these rituals are bringing a deeper love into our days.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I highly recommend it for any parent, care giver, or anyone who is around children. This book works like magic on my kids and my friends children that I have loaned this book too. When my kids are acting up and need a little extra attention and love, these finger games work perfectly to calm them down and put a smile on their face. Obviously my kids know I love them, and they mean EVERYTHING to me, but I really like how this book helps me show them even more ways to convey my love for them that is perfect for kids psyche. I also love how it changes some of the old nursery rhymes that are really not great if you listen to the words and message behind them, to positive uplifting ones, like "the Old Lady Who Lived In a Shoe" who whips her children and doesn't know what to do with them all, to a wonderful women who knows exactly what to do and loves her children dearly.

So far, I have read the intro to this book and it is amazing. I recently took a class in which the instructor referred to this book in working with students with visual impairments and autism. My professor emphasized the relationship development aspect of communication. This book gives great ideas for fostering relationships with all children (I learned about some of them from my professor). One thing I really got out of this is that when we bring ritual into our interactions with our loved ones, we show them that we have time for them and that we want to be "in the moment" with them. A very important message for everyone, and especially in this day and age.

This is a cool book--not exactly what I thought it was going to be, but I still found it quite useful. The book lines out the "why" of using rituals with your children--what they define as ritual is basically a fun, personal, sort-of secret 'thing' you share with your child, mostly songs in this particular book. I was thinking it would be more of actual ritual ideas (nothing weird!) for seasons of life or growing up stuff, threshold moments, you know. But this is more a listing of songs, mostly to the tune of old nursery rhymes now made sweeter, to sing to your kiddo at certain times, like when you pick him/her up from school or when it's his/her b-day or something like that. I really like the ideas and have incorporated 3 or 4 of them into my repertoire. So all in all, a cool find.

I bought this book after I saw it recommended elsewhere and was looking for ideas of rhyming games and songs to do with my two little ones (4 and 2). The book is easy to use, gives good illustrations and definitely met my expectations. Although I think it's perhaps a little extreme to completely re-write all of Mother Goose, my son loves doing the "cuddle games", as he calls them. If you're not creative enough (like me!) to invent games and songs like this on your own, this book will be very useful!

This book is just what it claims to be in the title: a collection of rituals that reinforce messages of love and belonging. The explanation for the importance of said rituals is very brief. So, if you're looking for a book filled with substance and science, this isn't it. However, if you're seeking a wealth of ideas for finger plays and other sensory delights that provide opportunities to deeply bond with your child - this is THE book for you! Each activity only takes a minute or two so they are easy to incorporate into your day during transition times or moments of play with your little one. My happiest chilhood memories are of the simplest rituals my father used in play. I'm so happy to have found a book that helps me to create the same lasting memories for my own son.

When I received this book and read the ideas, I thought they sounded great for very young children, but doubted I could use them with my 8 and 9yo. I thought they would see it as "babyish" and silly......but I gave a few of them a go, and they absolutely loved them! And asked for more and more! I think these are great for the older kids like my foster kids, who missed out on that kind of interaction when they were little. I am enjoying it, and so are the kids....I will do a couple each day till I become more familiar and can do them without the book.
