How to Use the I Choose Self-Control Board in the Elementary Age Bedroom

Nestled in Shubert’s Safe Place is his I Choose Self-Control Board. This two-sided tool helps him identify what he’s feeling, reflect on his actions and set a goal, and conduct a calming or self-regulatory strategy. Each step in the process is clearly depicted with visual choices, empowering Shubert to independently navigate changing his inner state from upset to calm (after plenty of practice and modeling with Mom and Dad).

Shubert uses the I Choose Board in his Safe Place, but he also takes it with him as a mobile Safe Place when he spends the night with Gma or Opa.

The three steps utilized in the I Choose Board are part of the five-step self-regulation process described in Managing Emotional Mayhem and conducted in the Feeling Buddies Self-Regulation Toolkit.
