Ahead of Elevate 2026 — the first year of Conscious Discipline’s dedicated Administrator Panel — Danny Bauer, host of the #1 downloaded school leadership podcast, talks about the “lead domino” theory of leadership, and why his coaching philosophy already speaks the language of Conscious Discipline’s SAFE Framework.
Danny Bauer has spent more than a decade coaching school leaders through his podcast, Better Leaders, Better Schools, the most-downloaded school leadership and principal podcast for K-12 educators, and through six books on school leadership, culture, and principal development. Ahead of his appearance at Elevate 2026, we spoke with Bauer about how his work began, what he’s learned coaching hundreds of school leaders, and where his philosophy intersects with Conscious Discipline’s SAFE Framework: Sustained Leadership, Adult Self-Regulation, Foster Community, and Engaged Classrooms.
“If I get better, everybody wins.” — Danny Bauer
That single line, delivered from the stage of the Global Leadership Summit nearly a decade ago, is what set Bauer on the path to founding Better Leaders, Better Schools. Without a formal mentor or coach of his own at the time, he decided to pick up a microphone, interview leaders about their successes and failures, and commit to acting on one idea from each conversation. The podcast that followed grew into a business almost by accident: as Bauer puts it, putting himself out there and asking good questions led people to believe he had the answers, and school leaders began reaching out for coaching.
Naming the Audience: The “Ruckus Makers”
Bauer credits author Seth Godin, whose books Tribes and Linchpin he studied closely, as a major influence on his thinking, along with Godin’s altMBA program, which Bauer completed and later coached for several cohorts. Godin’s frequent sign-off, “make a ruckus,” became the seed for Bauer’s name for his own audience: the Ruckus Maker, someone who questions why schools continue to operate the way they always have, and works instead to build what Bauer calls “a campus experience that’s worth showing up for.”
The Lead Domino: Where Bauer’s Work Meets SAFE
Over a decade of coaching, Bauer has arrived independently at many of the same conclusions Conscious Discipline builds its practice around — conclusions that map closely onto each pillar of the SAFE Framework.
Sustained Leadership. Every framework Bauer has built for the leaders he coaches starts with the leader first.
“You’re the lead domino. If you don’t figure yourself out first, you’re in trouble.” — Danny Bauer
Adult Self-Regulation. Early in his teaching career, Bauer noticed that his own energy and presence set the tone for his classroom. When students tested him with hostility, he stopped reacting and started responding with calm, open-ended answers instead.
“The moment I stopped jumping on the emotional roller coasters my students invited me on, I never wrote up another kid — for the next eight years.” — Danny Bauer
Foster Community. Bauer’s coaching model is deliberately small and relational: roughly 40 to 50 mastermind members and a handful of one-on-one clients, some of whom have stayed with him since his business began in 2016. He describes the model as self-mentorship — leaders taking radical ownership of their own growth, supported by a community rather than directed by top-down experts.
“Isolation is the number one enemy of excellence. Trust your inner leadership expert — but don’t do it alone.” — Danny Bauer
Engaged Classrooms. Bauer’s central challenge to the leaders he coaches is a question he returns to often: how do you build a campus culture that students and staff actually want to show up for, rather than one that simply maintains the status quo?
A Natural Fit for Elevate’s Administrators
Better Leaders, Better Schools has always been built around a single audience: school leaders and administrators who self-select into the work, rather than districts assigning it to them from the top down. That focus on the individual administrator, rather than the institution, is a natural match for Elevate 2026, where Conscious Discipline is placing renewed emphasis on programming built specifically for administrators — anchored by this year’s first-ever Administrator Panel.
Bauer’s own description of his audience reinforces the connection. “Districts don’t reach out to me. Individual leaders do — the ones ready to raise their hand and do the work.” That same self-mentoring spirit is exactly who Elevate’s Administrator Panel is designed to reach: administrators ready to lead differently.
What to Expect from Bauer’s Elevate 2026 Sessions
Bauer will deliver a keynote along with a follow-up breakout session at Elevate 2026 (session titles to be announced). Given Elevate’s mix of secondary, early-childhood, and Head Start educators alongside a growing administrator community, expect Bauer to build in the same reflective, interactive moments that define his coaching style, rather than a straight lecture — an approach well suited to an audience that spans long-tenured Conscious Discipline practitioners and administrators experiencing both Elevate and Bauer’s work for the first time.
“How do we create a campus experience that’s worth showing up for? That, at the end of the day, is everything.” — Danny Bauer

Quick FAQs
What is Conscious Discipline?
Conscious Discipline empowers adults to create safe, connected, and self-regulated systems, from classrooms to districts, so children can develop the emotional, behavioral, and executive skills they need to thrive. The practice is adult-first: it starts with the self-regulation of the grown-ups in the room.
How is Conscious Discipline different from traditional behavior management?
Traditional systems focus on managing a child’s behavior directly, through rewards or consequences. Conscious Discipline starts with the adult — building the self-regulation skills, structures, and relationships that make lasting cultural change possible.
What is the SAFE Framework?
SAFE stands for Sustained Leadership, Adult Self-Regulation, Foster Community, and Engaged Classrooms — the four pillars Conscious Discipline uses to describe how lasting, self-regulating school cultures are built and maintained.
Who is the SAFE Framework for?
SAFE is designed for the adults who set the tone for a school or district: administrators, school leaders, and the teams they lead, at any stage of implementing Conscious Discipline.
What does Conscious Discipline mean by “conscious leadership”?
Conscious leadership describes a leader who models the same self-awareness and self-regulation they hope to see in their staff and students — the idea, echoed by Bauer, that the leader is the “lead domino” for everything else in a school.
How does conscious leadership show up day to day?
It looks like a leader who manages their own state before responding to conflict, builds structures that foster genuine community rather than compliance, and treats moments of friction as opportunities to model and teach rather than to punish.
What is Elevate Conscious Discipline?
Elevate is Conscious Discipline’s annual national conference, bringing together educators, administrators, and mental health professionals for keynotes, breakout sessions, and hands-on implementation training.
What’s new for administrators at Elevate 2026?
Elevate 2026 features Conscious Discipline’s first-ever Administrator Panel, alongside programming, like Danny Bauer’s keynote and workshop, built specifically for school and district leaders.
Who should attend Elevate 2026?
Elevate is designed for administrators, teachers, mental health professionals, and school specialists working with children from early childhood through secondary education, at any stage of familiarity with Conscious Discipline.
